The Difference between a Dietician and a Nutritionist

A Dietician bases their dietary suggestions on Canada’s Food Guide: Basic four Foods Groups. Age, sex, stress levels, predisposition to diseases, illness, aren’t always considered in a dietary plan.

As Nutritionists, we understand that we all biochemically, have different needs and what we are eating requires us to support those needs, nutritionally.

Holistic Nutrition looks at the whole person. We evaluate the client’s lifestyle, illnesses, symptoms, family history and nutritional goals to help them get to a place that they are more aware and making changes in their diet. A big part of what we do is to educate them on the difference between, for example, good fats/bad fats, and what is a “whole grain”. Nutritionists also focus on preventative nutrition. Again, based on age, sex, stress levels and family history, we feel we can support weaknesses and possibly avoid disease for some clients.

The great thing is the clients themselves and media are starting to recognize that “what we eat” really does impact our long term health and are looking for guidance and support in this areas. As Nutritionists, we will be there to guide, educate and support them towards improved health.
